UK Surplus Operations Manager Mike Tierney,
FSL Logistics Director Marcus Watson,
Stores team Leader Norman Brewer,
Fork lift operative Mark Kirton.
Naval support services company Fleet Support
Limited (FSL) has made its first move into establishing Portsmouth Naval Base as
a centre for commercial logistics by securing a substantial contract to store
surplus Ministry of Defence equipment.
The contract for disposing of the equipment, which
can range from nuts and bolts to sophisticated ship systems, is held by UK
Surplus, the UK division of the global giant Liquidity Services, Inc. (LSI), who
are the biggest defence disposal organisation in the world.
The equipment is held in store before being
auctioned on the internet and distributed to its new owners. With one of the
biggest warehousing facilities in the South of England, FSL will hold the stock
pending sale. It is anticipated an additional 40,000 items a year will pass
through the Naval Base warehouses which are normally used to store regular
supplies and equipment for the RN's surface ships.
FSL Logistics Director Dr. Marcus Watson
explained: "The recent enhancement of our management software has enabled us to
offer the facilities to commercial customers and the UK Surplus agreement is our
first success in the outside market.
“The Naval Base warehouse facilities are under
utilised. With state-of-the-art, automated systems and high levels of security,
the Base presents an attractive logistics solution for civilian customers.
"Jaime Mateus-Tique, President and Chief Operating Officer of UK Surplus added:
"The FSL logistics facilities are among the best in the region and the move will
allow us to store equipment for disposal closer to the point of source, helping
to save costs."
