The importance of the defence sector in South Hampshire has been underlined by the publication today (Thursday, Feb 10) of a new report by economic experts at the University of Portsmouth.

The report, commissioned by naval support company Fleet Support Limited (FSL), highlights the major impact on employment and economic activity in the South Hampshire region created by the Naval Base and the associated conglomeration of maritime defence activity.

FSL Managing Director Ian Booth commented: “The report reinforces the strategic importance of the sector to the South Hampshire economy and shows that the Naval Base is at the sector’s hub. FSL and our industry partners at the Base are totally committed to consolidating Portsmouth’s position as the leading warship support and engineering facility in the UK. This will further strengthen the defence sector in the region and generate significant benefits throughout the South East economy .”

Findings in the report include the following statistics:

• Some 38,000 jobs in the region rely on the defence sector and the revenue generated as a result

• The defence sector in the area is responsible for pumping over £500 million into the South Hampshire economy (20 mile radius of Portsmouth Naval Base)

• Portsmouth Naval Base is the heart of the region’s defence sector with 17,000 jobs directly linked to the facility through naval personnel, private sector employees and contractors

The report is based on comprehensive research by the University into activities within the naval base and by leading defence companies and naval establishments in the area. This includes employee numbers, salaries and procurement spends with suppliers. Data from visiting naval ships and the contribution of the naval base heritage area are also factored in.

The research concludes that many of the naval establishments and private companies are located in the area because of the ships and activities at the base.

Mr Booth added: “ This is the first time that the real economic value of Portsmouth Naval Base and the related defence sector in the region has been measured. The research will be particularly valuable in pointing the way ahead for the Base in the future.” For the full report click here
