“The decision to build the new aircraft carriers is excellent news for Portsmouth, as not only does it bring ship build work into the Naval Base in the short term, but increased support requirements for the surface fleet in the longer term.

“The creation of the new joint venture company brings together the capabilities of BAE Systems and VT Group in the design, build, support and upgrade of complex warships of the future, and will bring benefits to both industry and the Ministry of Defence in terms of improved efficiency and enhanced delivery.

“All three announcements are excellent news for Portsmouth and underpin the long-term viability of the Naval Base in terms of employment and regional prosperity. “
